Lye and Explosions

As I gear up to make yet another batch of soap I am very aware of the dangers. Lye is extremely alkaline, very necessary for soap, all soap has lye. Controlling the lye/liquid is one of the most important aspects of soap making.
I made coconut soap this weekend with coconut milk. In order to control the lye/liquid I keep the container on ice and whisk constantly until the correct temperature for soaping has been reached. When I added the oils and fragrance a most magical emulsion emerged.
This soap is creamy and beautiful, just for Nicole who requested it.

How soap makes me feel, besides clean.

In a word, satisfied.

The love that goes into the making of my soap comes back to me ten fold in the enjoyment my friends get from using it. The feedback has been wonderful and the confidence I gain is immeasurable. This is something I do well and is all my own, to writing recipes, choosing shapes, picking colors, and doing art work on labels. As humans we all need something to be passionate about. Something we can be confident in knowing we do well. Maybe even be proud of. Rest assured that this blog will get better, My goal is for it to be more interesting than writing about paint drying.

Soap and Smell

There is a fine line between wonderful smelling soap and smells reminiscent of an AM PM Mini mart. Often the smells I like the most are the most unexpected. Of course lavender is my favorite but the orange spice I wasn’t sure about I want to put in every bar of soap. It is as with most things soap a learning experience. Not sure where this will take me only that it will take me somewhere.

Rosemary Spice Soap

This weekends soap was Rosemary Spice, it is a recipe I perfected using avocado oil along with the regulars(Coconut, olive, palm). I swirled green and white in my wooden mold. This soap takes the full 4 weeks to cure and makes a creamy wonderful soap.

This is the first of hopefully many blogs, I’ve never blogged before so here goes.
Soap making is about the ingredients coming together to make something planned and unplanned. Unplanned is the actual soap, color, fragrance, texture etc. As you blend the oils and lye to just the right consistency and add your colors and fragrances. As you dream about what the soap will look like, smell like, feel like. Then you mold and wait. Unmold, cut and wait some more, a month or two for the soap to be just right. No matter how much you plan the soap has a mind of it’s own though.
